AIMS AND SCOPE OF THE JOURNAL 

Aims and scope

Revista de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Valparaíso (ISSN print version 0716-7725; ISSN online version: 0719-8442), which has been uninterruptedly edited by the Law School of Universidad de Valparaíso since 1971, is an open access scientific publication, reviewed by peers through a double-blind system, with a biannual periodicity in digital format, oriented to the dissemination of original works in different areas of Law, including Public Law, Private Law, Legal Philosophy and Legal Sociology, which aims to offer reliable and high-quality scientific research, as well as to contribute, increase and disseminate the development of legal science both national and international level.

Frequency of publication

Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso accepts collaborations throughout the year. However, the articles group in two annual numbers, which are published during July and December of each year, in PDF and E-Pub formats suitable for review and download on all types of electronic devices.

Geographic scope and public

Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso has national coverage within Chile and international reach within Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Its target audience are Legal scholars, researchers, academics, students, and professionals dedicated to the legal field, both national and foreign.

Language of publication

Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso publishes original articles and reviews in Spanish, and also accepts works in Portuguese and English.

Call for papers

All Legal scholars, both national and foreign, are invited to present their works for publication on the journal. Publications in a regular issue include research articles and reviews about recently published manuscripts. The editorial team reserve the right of accepting or rejecting original works based on scientific quality, topic relevance, and data timeliness.

Anti-plagiarism policies

Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso is cautious about the originality of articles presented for publication and submits these documents for plagiarism analysis conducted by the OURIGINAL anti-plagiarism system (https://www.ouriginal.com/).

Originality and responsibilities of the authors

Only original and unpublished articles and book reviews will be accepted for submission. Works must address any of the topics described in Aims and scope. Manuscript submission implies the author is committed to not simultaneously submit it to other journals for consideration and to comply with the ethical standards and current editorial guidelines of the journal.

  • Authors are responsible of presenting completely original and unpublished articles to Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaiso.
  • Authors are compelled to carry out corrections or withdrawals if necessary.
  • Authors must properly identify research resources used to conduct the investigation of the submitted article.
  • Authors must precisely describe any relevant data that relates to the research results. Simultaneously, they must be authorized to reproduce any content from other sources.
  • Authors undertake to mention people who collaborated and contributed to the research and its results, so as to they appear as co-authors or collaborators if applicable (CrediT author statement).
  • Authors must acknowledge and provide all used sources. Therefore, they must use the appropriate citation style. It is understood that the authors are fully aware that plagiarism is not accepted.
  • Authors are compelled to inform about any financial conflict of interest that may interfere with the results or interpretations of the research. Hence, each author must undertake to describe the funding sources of the project or research, if appliable.
  • Authors must immediately report any major error that they noticed after submitting the article in order to make the necessary corrections.
  • Authors are compelled to participate in the peer-review process.
  • Authors must immediately inform to the journal’s Editor–in–chief whether they identify any significant error in their manuscript. At the same time, they must collaborate with the Editor–in chief– or the Associate Editor to publish an erratum, appendix, corrigendum or withdrawal within the document when considered necessary.

Their work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). This means that authors retain the moral rights to their work and allow it to be shared, copied, redistributed, and adapted, provided that appropriate credit is given, it is not used for commercial purposes, and any derivative works are distributed under the same license.

Article selection

Article selection is carried out through the editorial process developed by the Open Journal Systems (OJS.)

The average waiting period between reception and evaluation of submitted articles is approximately 17 weeks.

Publication process of submitted and accepted manuscripts by Revista de Ciencias Sociales takes 50 weeks at most, from reception to publication.

Editorial process consists of the following phases:

  1. Reception, preliminary review and distribution by the Editor–in–chief.
  2. Review by the Section Editor and suggestions by arbitrators.
  3. Formal review by the Associate Editor.
  4. Double-blind peer review. The reviewers are chosen based on their experience and previous academic work related to the topic of the article to be evaluated. At least two reviewers will submit their review considering the following evaluation criteria:
    1. Relevance of the content: Check whether the work is framed within the field of legal sciences, contributing to expanding disciplinary knowledge on topics of interest.
    2. Originality: Determine whether the central issue of the article is raised in a novel, clear and identifiable way; whether the reflection provides new approaches to the topic developed; or the knowledge provided contributes to addressing the problem addressed (or other related problems) in new ways.
    3. Quality and consistency: Check for a clear and well-founded development that displays an internally coherent argumentative chain.
    4. Structure, title and use of language: Determine whether the work offers a clear structure using pertinent and proportionate levels; whether its title adequately reflects the content and whether clear and precise technical language has been used in its development.
    5. Bibliography, erudition and dialogue with sources: Determine whether the bibliography used is up-to-date, sufficient and pertinent and whether its sources have been cited using them appropriately.
    6. Conclusion: Check that this constitutes a plausible culmination of the arguments presented and synthesizes the most relevant ideas of the work.

Finally, the evaluator must submit his or her recommendation to the Journal indicating the alternative that he or she considers pertinent (accept the submission / publishable with modifications / resend for review / resend to another publication / not publishable).

A new referee's review may be requested if required, taking into account the two previous evaluations and/or at the discretion of the Editor–in–chief.

  1. Decision of the editor-in-chief: Acceptance / Modifications / Resubmit for Review / Rejection.
  2. Corrections of substance and form to the author.
  3. Final review.
  4. Acceptance/Rejection of the article.

Policy on Academic Inbreeding

In accordance with international standards, the Revista de Ciencias Sociales of the Universidad de Valparaíso is committed to avoiding academic inbreeding in its publications. To this end, each biannual issue may include no more than 20% of articles in which at least one of the authors is an editor, a member of the editorial board, a reviewer, or affiliated with the Universidad de Valparaíso. This also applies to authors connected in any way to research projects led by faculty members of the same university, when the published work is a product of those projects.

The indicated percentage will be calculated based on all articles included in each biannual issue, excluding the editorial and review sections.

Once the 20% threshold has been reached, any additional articles falling under this category will be placed on hold. Their selection for a subsequent issue of the Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso will follow a chronological order based on their approval dates for publication.

AUTHORS INSTRUCTIONS

Published articles in Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso written by more than an author must include an authorship declaration based on CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy.) CRediT is a classification system that clarifies scientific communication through a standardized list of roles that describes specific contribution of authors on their articles.

It is possible to assign more than one role to the same author and, at the same time, one role can be carried out by more than an author. In case that various people perform the same role, it can be specified by contribution level; i.e. “lead”, “equal”, or “supporting.”

Contact author is responsible for role assignation and all authors must have the opportunity to review and confirm the assigned roles.

All authors must submit their authorship declaration together with their manuscript and complete the cover letter available at Autorship declaration Credit.

BUSINESS MODEL

Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso does not charge any kind of fee for article submission nor does apply any fee for processing, editing, layout, and publication of the received contributions (APC.)

The Revista de Ciencias Sociales is fully committed to the Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Scholarly Publishing, as adopted by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME). Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso has a membership on Crossref (https://www.crossref.org/members-area/) which allows to assign DOI persistent identifiers and to deposit metadata of the published articles.

Repository Policies

Revista de Ciencias Sociales allows authors to self-archive their articles once reviewed.

Self-Archiving and Digital Preservation Permission

Authors are permitted to self-archive their work in all its versions (preprint, author-accepted manuscript, post-print and published version). They may deposit their articles in institutional or thematic repositories, as well as on personal websites. This policy is designed to encourage the reading and citation of contributions and to achieve wider and faster dissemination of published articles.

Ownership and Management

The Revista de Ciencias Sociales is funded by internal resources of the Universidad de Valparaíso. This information will be published on the journal’s website.

The editorial team of the Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso ensures that the content hosted on its website adheres to the highest ethical and professional standards. The journal's aims and scope are clearly stated, as well as the intended readership.

The information for authors explicitly indicates that all research content is subject to academic peer review.

Journal Name

The name of the journal is clearly displayed on the website. The site also includes the ISSN and all necessary information to prevent confusion with other publications.

Advertising

Since 2013, Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso provides open, free and immediate access to its published contents, since 2024 under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license without embargo or register for all users and institutions.

Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso is part of the Budapest Open Access Initiative –BOAI, 2002. This initiative arose from a conference convened at Budapest by the Open Society Institute with the purpose of accelerating the international effort progress to make research articles in all academic areas freely available on the Internet.

Revista de Ciencias Sociales of Universidad de Valparaíso is defined as a journal in which the copyright holder assigns usage rights to a third party under an open license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.)This allows free and immediate access to articles and authorizes any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, link to full texts, track to index, transfer to a software, or use them for any legal purpose that does not imply modification of contents.
