Growth of the gastropod Concholepas concholepas in coastal Chile: A meta-analytic approach

A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the existence of a latitudinal gradient in the growth of Concholepas concholepas along the coast of Chile, using the phi-prime growth index (φ’) as the effect size. Overall, growth-parameter estimates were highly concentrated in a small number of studies, mainly technical reports. High heterogeneity was detected and could not be attributed to a single source of variation, but rather to the combined effects of the growth-parameter estimation method, geographic zone, and latitude. The methods used yielded conflicting evidence regarding the possible presence of publication bias. Finally, a latitudinal gradient in the phi-prime growth index was observed, together with high heterogeneity at the northern and southern extremes of the analyzed distribution. These differences may be related both to the methods used to estimate growth parameters and to local fishing, oceanographic, and geographic factors. Therefore, the use of locally derived growth-parameter estimates is recommended, particularly for northern and southern Chile.
