Abstract

Objective: to describe the evolution of obstetric and neonatal outcomes under the midwife-led birth care model at Hospital Clínico La Florida (SAIP) from 2016 to 2019.

Material and method: observational descriptive study with an analytical component. A total of 10,784 single births were analyzed. Outcomes from general Maternity care and SAIP were compared using Poisson regression for 15 obstetric-neonatal variables.

Results: cesarean rates were 6.4% in SAIP vs. 27% in the general Maternity unit. Continuous companionship was reported in 98% of SAIP cases, 81% of births used free position, and 67% achieved early breastfeeding. A sustained improvement in evidence-based, woman-newborn-centered practices was observed.

Conclusions: the SAIP model, led by midwives, is effective and safe. It demonstrates low cesarean rates, respectful care practices, and optimal neonatal outcomes, aligned with national and international quality standards.
