ARTICLE EVALUATION FOR PUBLICATION

Peer Review Process

All articles submitted to the journal will be subjected to the peer review system, with the exception of letters to the editor, whose publication depends exclusively on the General Editor and the General Editorial Committee. The average review time is 1 month. The peer review system is carried out according to the following sequence of steps:

Initial Review: The General Editor evaluates each manuscript to determine if the topic and content are suitable for the journal. Manuscripts that do not meet the minimum criteria will be returned to the authors within the first week of receipt.

Peer Review: Manuscripts that pass the initial review are assigned to a Section Co-Editor, who will select reviewers based on their expertise in a given topic. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two reviewers under a double-blind peer review process, where both the reviewer and the author remain anonymous. Reviewers evaluate the article based on its originality, methodology, potential impact, and relevance. Reviewers must complete their review within one month. After receiving the reviewers' reports, the Co-Editor makes a recommendation for acceptance of the manuscript to the General Editor.

Recommendation: Based on the reviewers' comments and the Co-Editor's recommendation, the General Editor makes the final decision for the manuscript and communicates the decision to the author along with the reviewers' reports. The final decision can be:

  • Accepted
  • Requires minor revisions
  • Requires major revisions
  • Rejected

A revised manuscript must be resubmitted within the next month in the case of minor revisions and within the next three months in the case of major revisions. Generally, the manuscript is returned to the original reviewers.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Statement of Editorial Ethics and Good Practices

The Applied Sciences in Dentistry Journal is committed to achieving and upholding standards of ethical behavior at all stages of the publication process, based on the good practice parameters of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). In accordance with this ethical code, editors, reviewers, and authors assume the following responsibilities:

Ethical Responsibilities

Works submitted to the Journal must contain a detailed description of the experimental and analytical procedures performed, allowing for the replication of the reported results objectively and commensurately with the study's results. Likewise, they must not contain false or distorted statements, which constitutes unethical behavior. Any idea or result described in a manuscript submitted to the Journal that belongs to someone who is not a co-author, or that has been previously published, must be appropriately referenced.

Author Responsibilities

  • Authors must submit original works, not previously published even partially in another journal, under consideration, or accepted for publication. They must be the result of the authors' own work and/or ideas; plagiarism is not accepted.

  • Authors, particularly the corresponding author, commit to acknowledging all persons who have collaborated and contributed to the research and its results, and to ensuring that all have reviewed, studied, and approved the content of the article before it is submitted for publication.

  • It is the obligation of the authors to declare any conflict of interest or financial interest that could interfere with the research results or interpretations.

  • Authors must actively engage in the peer review process and must promptly provide truthful information requested by the reviewers or the Journal's Editorial Committee.

  • If an article is published with numerical, conceptual, spelling, or typographical errors, and one of the authors notices it, it is their responsibility to immediately notify the Editorial Committee and cooperate to publish an erratum, or retract the article, if deemed necessary.

  • Authors wishing to retract an article must send a letter to the Editorial Committee stating their desire and explaining the reasons for their request. Once the Editorial Committee meets and analyzes the case, a clearly identifiable retraction note will be published in the table of contents and indexing services.

Reviewer Responsibilities

  • Reviewers must contribute to decision-making for the publication process by assisting in improving the quality of articles through objective, fair, and timely reviews. Reviews must be formulated in a respectful, constructive tone, free of personal opinions or value judgments. If the reviewer does not consider themselves sufficiently expert or qualified to review an article, they must state this after reading the abstract.

  • Reviewers must maintain complete confidentiality of the information provided by the editor or the author. Furthermore, they must alert the editor to any published or presented content that is substantially similar to that under evaluation and has not been noticed by the editorial committee.

  • Reviewers must be free of any potential conflict of interest related to the article, financial sources, institutions, collaborations, or other relationships between the evaluator and the author. They must alert the editor of this, withdrawing their services for the manuscript in question if necessary.

Editor Responsibilities

  • The Editorial Committee assumes the responsibility of ensuring compliance with the rules and procedures contained in this declaration, and of alerting other members when there is a breach of these.

  • Editors must act in a balanced, objective, and fair manner while performing their expected duties, without discrimination based on the authors' gender, sexual orientation, political or religious beliefs, or ethnic or geographical origin. They are obligated to consider and accept articles solely on their academic merit and without commercial influence.

  • The editorial committee will ensure that reviewers, under no circumstances, attempt to have the author cite irrelevant texts from journals and/or authors for the sole purpose of fraudulently increasing the prestige of said journal and/or author.

  • The editorial team will not reveal information about the authorship of articles to the reviewers, and likewise must follow the necessary procedures to guarantee that the identity of the reviewers remains anonymous. Nor must they reveal the content of articles submitted for publication consideration to anyone.

  • Editors must adopt and always follow reasonable procedures in the event of complaints of an ethical or conflictual nature, in accordance with editorial policies. They must give authors a reasonable opportunity to respond to any complaint. All complaints should be investigated regardless of when the original publication was approved. Documentation associated with any such complaint should be preserved.

  • Editors should always be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when necessary.

  • Editors must be free of any conflict of interest related to the authors, the work, or its funders, that inclines their decision toward the acceptance or rejection of a particular manuscript. If they have an insurmountable impediment, they must declare it promptly and step aside from the evaluation of a particular work.

  • The decision of acceptance, rejection, or conditional acceptance is the absolute sovereignty of the Editorial Committee, based on its judgment of the feasibility, originality, and contribution of the work.

  • If a member of the Editorial Committee notices errors or inaccuracies in articles that have already been published, it is their responsibility to inform the other members of the Committee to proceed with a correction or retraction as the case warrants.

PROCEDURES FOR UNETHICAL BEHAVIOR

Identification of Unethical Behavior Anyone, at any time, can identify unethical behavior and inform the editor. The following constitute unethical conduct: Plagiarism, omission of co-authorships; failure to indicate the use of funding sources; total or partial submission of already published writings; use of unpublished articles by a referee, editor, or member of the editorial committee; reviewing a manuscript in the presence of conflicts of interest; and in general, any other conduct that compromises good practice parameters.

Investigation Whoever informs the editor of unethical conduct must provide sufficient background information to initiate the investigation. All allegations must be taken seriously and treated equally. The investigation will be kept confidential, avoiding the disclosure of evidence about the person accused of unethical conduct. It will be ensured that the person accused of unethical conduct has the opportunity to formulate their defense.

Infractions Infractions can be minor, in which case the Editor will consult with two members of the Editorial Committee. For serious infractions, all members of the Editorial Committee must be informed, and their opinion requested regarding the need to consult an expert to evaluate the situation and the appropriateness of informing the employer of the person who has engaged in unethical conduct. Once the investigation is concluded, one or more of the following measures may be applied, according to the severity of the infraction:

A. For manuscripts under evaluation and in the publication process

  • Inform the person about the breach of ethical publication standards.

  • Warn the person in more severe terms that their conduct is unacceptable and cannot be repeated in the future. If repeated, the journal reserves the right to reject the article.

  • Remove the manuscript from the journal, even if it has been accepted.

B. For published articles

  • Publication in the same journal of a note or editorial indicating the ethical breach.

  • Regarding the electronic version, incorporate a retraction note as the first page, before the article, indicating the reasons for retraction and placing a mark indicating "Retracted Article" on all pages of the article.

C. For all manuscripts and articles

  • If the conduct corresponds to a criminal offense, report it to the appropriate authorities.

  • Send a formal and informative letter to the employer or the institution to which the person accused of the offense belongs.

Plagiarism Policy Submitted manuscripts are reviewed to verify their originality. All manuscripts are subject to a similarity check using Ouriginal; articles exceeding the limit of more than 19% similarity are returned to the authors for clarification and/or correction.

POLICY REGARDING THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Applied Sciences in Dentistry is closely monitoring current developments in this area and will review (and update) these policies as appropriate.

AI Authorship Large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, currently do not meet our authorship criteria. In particular, attributing authorship carries a series of responsibilities that we cannot effectively apply. The use of an LLM or any other AI must be appropriately documented in the Materials section of the manuscript.

AI-generated Images Advances in AI image generation have given rise to copyright and research integrity conflicts. As a journal, we strictly follow existing copyright laws. Although legal situations related to AI-generated images and videos remain unresolved, the Applied Sciences in Dentistry Journal does not allow their use in articles published within it. As we expect things to develop rapidly in this field in the near future, we will review this policy periodically and adapt it if necessary. Please note: not all AI tools are generative. The use of non-generative machine learning tools to manipulate, combine, or enhance existing images or figures must be disclosed in the corresponding caption at the time of submission to allow for a case-by-case review.
